Game Design - What is it?

Game Design

What is a game?

1.0: Okay. So what I have learned from this is that anything can be a game. Taking from the reading. Three to Fifteen is very similar to Tic-Tac-Toe except it's not an exact copy. From this we learn that they are different games but this is exactly why we need to define what a game actually is. All to avoid confusion.

1.1: Critical Vocabulary is all about analysing a game critically , as in being able to analyse them carefully by considering all of their parts and how they fit together. From what I have gathered is that there is a list of terms to define each game but it is taking a while to create the list because new games are being created. So lets say Tic-Tac-toe is a puzzle game. Other's may come to think of it as a competitive puzzle game which then breaks the list into a whole new category.

1.2: Games Defined. The concept of what is a game? is very difficult to define in a way that doesn't leave things out that are games or accept things that are clearly not games (this is all very confusing to me). By definition; A game is an activity involving player decisions, seeking objectives within a "limiting context" [i.e. rules].
To break this down.. Games;
  • Are an activity
  • Have rules
  • Have conflict
  • Have goals
  • Involve decision making
  • Are artificial, safe and outside of ordinary life
  • Involve no material gain
  • Are voluntary
  • Have an uncertain outcome
  • Are a representation or Simulation
  • Have systems

What exactly is Game Design

2.0: Game design has a very specific meaning, and unfortunately this reading won't tell me what the meaning is. It's kind of frustrating me at this point that the whole definition of Game design isn't as simplistic as one thing but I guess in some cases that can be seen as fun and a whole new definition of learning. There are different tasks associated with game design: system design, level design, content design, UI design, world building and story writing.

2.1: Right.. So.. Game design as a incredibly broad field (This is getting annoying..).

Game designers are:

  • Artists
  • Architects
  • Party hosts
  • Research scientists
  • Gods
  • Educators
  • Lawyers

  1. You seem to have a great understanding of game design which is very useful. I liked how you took a step back and looked at what a game designer is like a lawyer I found this interesting as its a way I wouldn't be thinking.
